Web/Mobile App Critique

How do you decide which apps you will continue to use? There are several factors by which to compare them - Usability, Functionality, and Design. I evaluated my Amazon shopping app. I love the app because it’s easy to use, has many things you can do with it, although I think the design is more jam packed than necessary and feels cramped. I will go into each of these three aspects next.

Usability

The app has never crashed on me. The Amazon app offers a user-friendly and efficient shopping experience with its intuitive interface and helpful features. Users can easily search for products using the robust search function, while personalized recommendations based on their history enhance their shopping journey. The app's one-click ordering simplifies checkout, and user reviews aid informed decisions. Wish lists and shopping carts organize items, tracking orders, estimated delivery dates, and notifications provide transparency. The barcode scanner facilitates quick price comparisons, and customer support options are readily available. Integration with Prime membership benefits further elevates the usability of the app, making it a convenient and seamless platform for browsing, shopping, and managing orders. When you click on one product, it also lists similar items so you can compare without having to go back to the main list.

Functionality

You can do a lot with the app. I order my cat food as a subscription because when I used to buy it from the store, there would be many times where it was out of stock, and these are heavy boxes. The subscribe and save feature does not cost more than I would pay at the store and has made life easier in this regard. You can not only track your orders but on the day of your delivery, you can see which stop you are on the route so you can pinpoint when you will receive the delivery. Customer reviews are huge within the app because other than getting valid opinions on the products, you can ask questions to the seller prior or after the purchase. Returns and refunds are made easy with the app with a few clicks on the Orders page and normally there are several options of locations to return to item to (places with an Amazon kiosk such as Whole Foods). Their delivery times are very quick, and you can always opt for free delivery. It says it will take longer but I’ve noticed it usually doesn’t take much longer; it updates to a closer date.

Design

I would say that the app is well organized, although it’s a bit too busy for my taste. Often, I will see products I have no interest in on the main page. The background is white with clear headings and fonts. To address concerns about the Amazon app feeling overly busy, several strategies could be considered. First, streamlining the home page layout by focusing on essential information and relevant recommendations can help reduce visual clutter and improve user navigation. Secondly, incorporating more advanced contextual personalization algorithms can ensure that users receive content and product suggestions that align with their preferences, thereby enhancing the relevance of the app's content. Lastly, introducing customization options that allow users to tailor their interface and filter content can empower them to prioritize the information that matters most to them, ultimately creating a more user-centric and less overwhelming app experience. Continuous user testing and feedback will play a vital role in refining these strategies to achieve an optimal balance between information and simplicity.
